Chapter 8

Ilyn had watched them tear the place apart for a week. It broke his heart a little to see them carrying out destroyed furniture and pieces of flooring. He and Marisha had been happy there, mostly. As far as he could tell from his hotel room, the jewel was undisturbed. No one had brought out anything that looked like a chandelier.

His wife had been a clever woman. She knew that any safe could be cracked and any hole, no matter how deep, could be defeated by a shovel and time. She preferred to hide things in plain sight. The gem in question was yellow in color, so she'd had Hazel's husband turn it green to exactly match all of the round green crystals hanging from the chandelier in the foyer. One quiet evening, when there was no one around to see, Ilyn had replaced a single crystal with the disguised relic, a weapon of mass destruction that would hang harmlessly from the ceiling for hundreds of years.

Ilyn had come to check on the place when it had been wired for electricity. He'd made certain the stone was still safe in its anonymity amongst the others. But it had been a century since he'd set foot in the house. A lot can happen in a century.

Stay out of trouble. No more boxcars, okay?"

Megan looked at him, stunned. "I can't take this. This is a lot of money. Is this from drugs or something?"

"Of course you can, and of course it isn't from drugs. It's mostly from gambling. Don't trouble yourself over it. If I don't come back, I'm most likely dead. I won't need it anymore." He patted her on the shoulder and stood to leave.

"Wait . . . why didn't you ever bite me?"

He smiled and shrugged. "I suppose because my daughter wouldn't have liked it," he answered. "Good luck."

I'm the one that needs it, he reminded himself as he pulled up his hood and stepped into the hallway.

He approached the house carefully. It appeared, at first, that no attack had been planned. The place was utterly silent as the vampire snuck in through a skylight. He found himself in what once had been Hazel and her family's apartment. He could almost see her there sitting at the desk, ramrod
